Subject: [ferrethealth] Ferret with osteomyelitis. please help!
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

hello everyone!!

I rescued a ferret who was found in he streets. The
thing is that he had fallen out of a window and broke all his 4 legs.
One of the back ones had an open fracture and the leg had to be
amputated.

As he was lost in he streets with the open wound, he
developed Osteomyelitis. He was treated with 2 different series of
antibiotics for 2 months in the Animal Hospital.

Then he came home with me and we stopped the antibiotics (cause thay were n=
ot working anymore and making his stomch sick). The back leg he has left, s=
till had an infected open wound so I had to apply nitrofurazone cream twice=
daily. The stitches and wound of the amputated leg healed ok. But the bact=
erial infection continued so now, after one month, we started with antibiot=
ics again.

I have 3 questions:
1: Do you think he=B4ll cure from the Osteomyelitis? The vet says his
bacteria are like Terminator. I hope the antibiotics work this time.

2: Will he ever walk "normally" again with only 3 legs? So far he
pushes with his front legs and drags the back one. The front legs are
all sore and the vet says they hurt. Maybe when he recovers, he=B4ll
start using them better? I heard we can do swimming theraphy?

3: His stomach is very upset...I think it=B4s because of the
antibiotics. When he was in the streets maybe he ate anything he
found... then in the Hospital they gave him A/D cans but it gave his
diahrrea.

Now, at home, I feed him Totally Ferret and 1/4 of A/D can
a day. He eats a lot and poops a lot, but his poops were never
normal. They are sometimes soft, greenish, with mucous, seedy, sometimes
huge, others slimy... They recommended me giving him 1 tbsp. of
yogurt. I=B4m giving him goat yogurt with no additives, no flavour, no
sugar (only 1 tbsp. a day, because of the lactose). But he doesn=B4t
improve.

Any suggestions? What should I feed him? Supplements? (he is
on antibiotics now again)

Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks!!!
