Kim,
Is it possible that what you've got going on is ECE? I haven't had
time to read all of this extremely carefully, but my skimming seems to
show that we're talking about ferrets introduced to other ferrets and
a fairly sudden onset of diarrhea. Supportive care, especially
aggressive hydration, is the key, and you're on top of that already.
I wouldn't make too much out of the rods... I remembered a post from
Dr. Williams a long time ago, and it sounds like this can be normal
gut flora:
