Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Ferret with lump (size of marble between shoulder blades right of center
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Meryl,

Has Babs received a rabies or canine distemper vaccination within the
last six months or so, and if so, do you know if the vet injected the
vaccine over the shoulders? I have seen a few ferrets develop a hard
mass, rather flat and movable, about the size of a nickle or dime,
right over the top of the shoulders, from the rabies vaccine.

If the mass is to either side of the neck, between the shoulders and
head, it could be an enlarged prescapular lymph node. They will have a
node on each side of the neck.

Other masses I've seen included an abcess due to another aggressive
ferret and a dermal blister from a parasite (not very high on the list
of possibilities!).

There are also various cysts and skin tumors that could cause a movable
lump.

Lymphoma does respond to pred, but I would wait until it is looked at
by her vet if you are not sure what it is. If it should happen to be
an abcess, you wouldn't want to give pred. If it is Good luck!
