Dear Jane:

You are the highest order of observant owner ! Most would just be
happy about the absence of that odor.

Yes, scent glands can be blocked. They are connected to the anus by a
very small neck (hey are actually sacs - the glandular component is
very small). If there is any type of infection, the neck can be
blocked and the whole process backs up.

Another possibiliy is a tumor around the anus which may be related or
unrelated to the scent gland. Tumors in this area may be
troublesome, so I think that you are wise to schedule that
appointment.
