Subject: [ferrethealth] question on neutering
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

I have an intact ferret who is 19 months old. He is suffering from an enlarged heart with a significant murmur. He is very active and plays hard but then slumps down to rest and occasionally pants after playing too hard. My question is about neutering him. He was not neutered at a younger age because during his pre-surgery check-up his dilated cardiomyopathy was discovered. My doctor, who I trust, has said it is not safe for him to be neutered because of the anesthetic. I am afraid he will bring on an attack when he is in rut though because of how driven he is. Is there a reliable, painless, SAFE, method which my doctor could use that would enable him to be neutered without danger to him? I have had a ferret go under anesthetic for routine testing and never wake up. I can not take the chance of putting this little guy at that kind of risk.
Thank you,
Laurel
