I have an appointment with a
vet that uses Merial vaccines and does not pre-medicate before hand.
He feels it doesn't really help anyway and will treat the ferret
afterward if need be. Is this a good distemper vaccine with low
incident of reactions?
**The Merial distemper vaccine (Purevax) is the only vaccine available that
is licensed to prevent distemper in ferrets. It has about the same level of
reaction as every other vaccine I've used. Personally, I pretreat almost every
ferret before vaccinating with dexamethasone and have seen a reduction in both
number and severity of reactions after starting that protocol, but many of my
colleagues do not pretreat.**
