Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: how can you tell is a ferret is down
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Since the subject line points to wondering if your ferret is depressed,
I will say an animal doesn't usually go through depression like a human
may. They may react to loss of a mate or extreme change in their
routine with some kind of depression ( not eating, not playing) but you
still have to make sure it is not illness and have a vet check.

For what you descibe, it seems after playing he just 'flat ferrets'
goes down flat and looks 'sad' - this can be normal ferret behavior and
sometimes indicated boredom, or just taking a break.
You can test it out by moving him to an area he doesn't get to play in
often and he should perk right up adn start exploring. Or engage him in
play. If he responds quickly, it is just his way of taking a break, or
stopping to wait for something better to happen.
I also give mine a quick lick of ferretone, those that are just taking
a break will quickly perk up to get their favorite treat- one that is
really out of it or ill may not respond at all.

An older ferret, with new change in behavior, like spacing out ,
drooling, sluggish to respond to stimuli, or change in environment
should go to the vet for blood glucose check and exam.
Or if he is vomiting, not eating, diarrhea or other health concerns, a
vet check is indicated as well.
