I don't normally post, but I had to say that Sukie's advice on
integrating a new ferret into a group is some of the best I've seen
written and right on.
I've always thought I was looked at as half crazy when I've told
people the best thing that has worked for me is to REASSURE the
existing ferrets(s) that they are still loved and are not being
replaced. I truly believe this is the single most important thing you
can do. And the snuggling and offering treats at the same time to the
newby and the one having a difficult time with the integration is the
second best thing that's worked for me in junction with the repetitive
reassurance.
On rare occasions with an especially tough integration, I have had to
resort to a scruff and hiss for someone who really gets rough, but
that's as far as it goes, and right after I always give him
reassurance that he's loved and is not being replaced in any way. I
also make sure to give the existing ferrets extra one on one time
while integrating, and double reasurrance and one on one for anyone
having problems with the new addition...I'm telling you these few
things work like magic as long as you're consistent with the
reasurrance!
I have 15 ferrets...12 that live in one group together, so I'm
thinking I must have done something right.
Great advice, Sukie!! :-)
