We've used viokase with no adverse effects in our group that we are
aware of. My understanding with viokase is it should be left to sit in
the food for at least 10 minutes before feeding so that it has time to
break down the food making it easier to digest.
I've had good results with pepto for diarrhea in many cases. I believe
the coating action is helpful in the healing process. Peanut did well
with pepto and he did manage to gain weight when we added it to his
treatment.
There are other products to try for diarrhea too such as slippery elm
bark and Pet Pectillin.
Also, sometimes the foods we feed contribute to the diarrhea. If I put
too much SD A/D in the recipe it will cause diarrhea in some of the
ferrets. And if a ferret has an allergy to one of the ingredients that
can cause diarrhea.
