Subject: [ferrethealth] Jynx update
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

First of all, thanks to everyone who has emailed me your suggestions,
advice, etc.

I took Jynx back to the vet again today. She was having trouble
walking, definitely not improving. But she hasn't beeen scratching
her ears or shaking her head like she had been.

I asked the vet to check her ears again anyway. They are clean, no
discharge or smell or anything to indicate an ear infection or
mites. I asked about diabetes, but the vet said she didn't believe
it was that b/c her glucose has always been normal or on the low side-
never high. She ran another blood test on her, and Jynx's white
blood count came back very low today- 1300. She also had a fever
again- 105.4 degrees. I don't know what her glucose level was. Dr.
Smith then did a blood smear and checked it under the microscope-
just to make sure- since her BC dropped so much. It really is low.

So, apparrantly Jynx has some sort of infection, yet the vet hasn't
been able to find the source. It appears that this infection or
something is affecting her bone marrow, and she isn't produing the
white blood cells needed to fight off the infection. Dr. Smith then
had the other ferret vet in the office look over Jynx's xrays from
yesterday to see if she was missing anything.

They (the vets) think it could be one of 2 things: neoplastic
something cancer (but they don't see any sign of cancer) OR her blood
is now septic from this infection/ bacteria/ whatever- which seems
more likely. They suggested that I leave Jynx with them over the
weekend, and they are setting her up with an IV of antibiotics. Dr.
X said that she may not pull though. I can visit her tomorrow
while they are open, but not Sunday. There will be a vet (the other
ferret vet) and a tech coming by twice while they are closed, but I
still just hate leaving her there all alone. Of course, Jynx really
only wants to be left alone to sleep, so maybe she'll get more rest
without me coming in and bothering her every 30 minutes.

And now, we just play the "wait and see" game. Hopefully the IV will
work, and she'll be home with me Monday.

Thanks again for all your help,

Tara
