To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Well, that is tricky, of course, because the medical needs for raising blood glucose levels
can at times worsen heart disease.

You will want to find out:
1. Which type of cardiomyopathy may be present
2. How advanced it is if so
3. If A/V Heart Node Block is present (insulinoma seems able to trigger that heart
problem)
4. Which Level of Node Block is present if so (Level 1 not usually a problem, Level 2
manageable, Level 2 Sinus will usually worsen into Level 3, Level 3 is the same as
complete. Like cardiomyopathy in ferrets Level 3 Node Block is terminal but treatable.
5. If your ferret's blood glucose responds well to Diazoxide which will allow you keep
Prednisolone/Prednisone levels lower.
6. If your ferret does not respond well to Diazoxide you will want to try Prednisolone
instead of Prednisone. The reason is this: the utilize Prednisone the liver must first
convert it to Prednisolone, so if there is any liver compromise (even silent at this point)
you can get away with lower doses for the same effect with Prednisolone compared to
Prednisone

In the Files section of the FHL are two compilations of posts on the topics of
cardiomyopathy and Node Block, sifted down some to save time for readers. Combining
those with later information in the Archives should be of help.

Look in these places. When more is pinned down other resources may be able to be
mentioned.
