I am posting this for Dr. Bruce Williams:

Dear Jennifer:

I have read the attached cytology report and the explanation is fairly stra=
ightforward. I
have seen a number of cases like this, but it is unusual to get a pancreati=
c cytology.

The presence of eosinophils in a sample of the pancreas is strong indicatio=
n that Louie has
a variant of inflammatory bowel disease known as eosinophilic enteritis. T=
he name of this
condition does not do it justice, as the presence of large numbers of eosin=
ophils may be
seen in any organ, not just the gut. Early on, the presence of this type o=
f inflammation led
some investigators to believe that it was the result of parasites in the gu=
t and abdomen of
affected ferrets, but no parasites have ever been seen.

EE is a severe form of inflammatory bowel disease which after time, leaves =
affected ferrets
with chronic diarrhea and wasting. It can usually be treated by suppression=
of the immune
system (usually with steroids) and a bland diet. It is not a curable disea=
se, but it certainly
manageable.

There are few things that cause the presence of high numbers of eosinophils=
in ferrets =96
that is why this finding is so significant and leads to a specific diagnosi=
s, even without
having to see the slides.

With kindest regards,

Bruce Williams, DVM
