Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Insulinoma and prednisone adjustment problems
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

First of all, food and water are available at all times for all three
of my ferrets. She is refusing all of it and will eat only the
soup. I have even tried hand feeding her kibble she has eaten before
and liked. She turns her head away from it.

The prednisone is 5mg tabs prescribed 7-24-07 at 1/4 tab twice a day
and has since been changed to 1/2 a tab twice a day.

The vet and I argued prenisone vs prednisolone with her pushing for
the prednisone. She and her tech argued that this was the better med
and easier on the liver. I knew better, but they, as the
professionals, knew they "knew" better. There are about 7 vets in
this small town but none are what could be called ferret
knowledgeable. This is a farming community. I have had ferrets for
about 5 years, all rescues from people that brought them into this
area and then couldn't keep them for various reasons.

What was prescribed for my ferrets was recommended out of a book that
the vet read while I was there. I had taken their bg before I took
them in; I knew the signs and knew what was needed, but I had to tell
the vet and she had to look it up to verify it. And she's the best
one out of all the vets here. I've even had one of her interns tell
me that one of my girls was "running a temp" at 102. This is what
I'm up against. I need good advice and research to even take into a
vet.

I gave her a bit of honey and followed it with what she would eat of
a high protein meal before I posted the first time.. She's back to
sleep again.
