Oh, that got me thinking. (Always dangerous. ;-) )

Anyway, since insulinoma causes nausea the low levels of food and the low blood glucose
themselves could be responsible for the poor eating which is worsening everything.

But is the Pred being given along with food? If the ferret isn't eating the steroid could
more easily be damaging the stomach.

So, I wonder if some of the prescription )pediatric) liquid preparation of Carafate which is
available from any pharmacy may be smart to try. DO separate it from the other meds,
though. It probably doesn't need to be separated from them by as much as an hour but
that is what we do simply because it is easier to keep track of that way. Give maybe at
least a half hour after meds; I can't recall the timing different vets advise but it is in the

There is only one concentration of the standard (not compounded) liquid version and we
have usually been told to provide from 0.15 to 0.25 ml each time given.

Your first description of "stomach pain, teeth grinding,
dark tarry stools and weight loss" is classic for a stomach
ulcer. Milo needs Carafate about 10 to 15 minutes before feeding,
every time you feed him (4+ times a day) and before you give
him his pred for 2 to 4 weeks.
Your second description of "weakness, drunk walking, and being
cold and limp" is common with very low blood glucose. It is time to
increase the amount of Pediapred, and it should be giving 2 times
a day with food. Again after Carafate.
Time to feed him the baby food several times a day also.
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM
