Subject: [ferrethealth] Need opinion please
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I am so sick and upset tonight. I can barely see to write this but I need some opinions to see if a warning is needed. I just lost my Molly.
This afternoon I noticed that she was not opening her one eye. Wanting to make sure that it is not Glaucoma, I took her to the local vet. I felt sure that even though he's not very familiar with ferrets, he would be able to see what was wrong with the eye. For other problems I drive a long way to see a ferret vet.
He looked and told me that there was no Glaucoma but he wanted to put some drops in her eye to see if there was something else going on. He put some green drops in that eye and saw that there were a couple scratches. I was glad that it wasn't Glaucoma and he gave me a small tube of antibiotics to put in her eye three times a day.
When I got home, I put some in her eye and she went to curl up in her bed. Thirty minutes later I heard her gagging and I couldn't believe what I was seeing! She was vomiting blood and blood was coming out of her nose. She was limp, arched backwards and I knew right then that I was loosing her. I was right, a few seconds later she stopped breathing, she was gone!.
I am in total shock, I can't believe what had just happened and I need to find out if the antibiotic could have caused this. It's a small 3.5g tube and it says :Triple Antibiotic Ointment. Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates and Bacitracin Zinc Opthalmic Ointment USP.
Manufactured by Bausch&Lomb.
I am shaking all over, my Molly is gone because of me.
Molly did have a heart condition and was on Enalapril and also had a mass in her lungs which would have taken her at some point down the road but she was still doing really good on the meds and eating well, just not so active anymore, sleeping a lot. She was eating and feeling fine before we left and this is why I'm so shocked over what just happened. I feel in my gut that it was the ointment that brought this on. Is it possible?
Can I get some opinions on this. I still can't believe it, I am so upset and I feel so guilty about having taken her to get her eye looked at and now she is dead! I will blame myself forever for this but right now I wonder if I need to warn about this ointment. The vet was closed already but tomorrow I will need to let him know.He is a very caring vet and I know he would not knowingly give me something to hurt Molly. I should really be the one informed enough about the meds for my ferrets and should have asked on the list here before I gave them to her. I feel so terribly guilty and it's tearing my insides to pieces. I just have to know if it is possible that this ointment was what could have killed her so I can let him know not to use this on ferrets anymore. The blame lays with me, not the vet. I just feel so terrible sick.
With a broken heart,
Helga
