Subject: [ferrethealth] Ash Content
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

Ash relates to the inorganic (not carbon based) elements of the diet that
are left behind after burning at 500 deg C. which removes all carbon. It
mainly consists of the minerals, both major such as calcium, potassium and
magnesium, and minor including iron, manganese and copper. It is a normal
food label listing. For optimum urinary/kidney heath we should be more
concerned about optimum hydration and the proper balance of calcium,
phosphate, oxalates, urate, cystine, and xanthine, most of which contribute
to the ash level but at unknown levels in that single reported
determination. I analyzed (through WARF) the Marshall Ferret natural source
(high moisture) diet years ago and reported those findings in the book by
James Fox. The Marshall animals that I saw did not have urinary/kidney
disease.

What would an aceptable range of ash content be in ferret/feline kibble,
with reguard to
optimum urinary/renal health?
