Subject: [ferrethealth] Suspect insulinoma
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I'm sorry this is long, and I'm hoping to get some vet and
experienced ferret person input in here
if possible because I live in a no-ferret zone and my vet does not
regularly see ferrets, except for mine. It has been a learning
adventure for both of us obviously.

History: I have an approximately 4 year old rescued hob who has
started showing what appear to be signs of insulinoma over the past
three months. It started with ptylism (no serious drooling,
very "wet" mouth) so I started adding soupy to his diet thinking he
had tummy problems. It has progressed now to tremors when he hasn't
eaten for a few hours...not the typical waking up shivers. While he's
trembling, he's usually staring off into space like he's daydreaming.
He lost 3 ozs...but has been holding at 3 lbs since I added soupy to
his diet. I tested him with a Bayer Contour BG meter during one of
these shaking episodes and it registered 48mg/dL. The
shaking/trembling usually stops after eating. Four days ago he had an
episode where he trembled so badly he could not stand. I tried
rubbing Karo syrup on his gums and within 60 seconds the episode was
over, he went and ate and seemed fine.

I took Nibbles to the vet today after a two hour fast, it was almost
three hours after the wait. He was just beginning to shake, but it
could have been nerves. His BG was 122. I believe they drew the blood
after iso administration. My question is, what should the next step
be? My vet is talking about a glucose "curve" test...but he also
mentioned a new test being done on cats that is not as complicated.
It was my understanding that the glucose series would be more
reliable than other types of tests. Also, would there be another
illness that would cause the symptoms Nibbles is showing? It would be
nice to have some more experienced guidance.

Thank you...sorry for the long post :(

Bonnie
