Subject: [ferrethealth] re: pediapred and carafate
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I found these info articles written by pharmacists and reviewed by MDs on MedicineNet.com that may help your vet track some down...

Pediapred Oral Liquid Medrol, aka Prednisolone (NOTE that this is prednisolone, NOT prednisone)
http://www.medicinenet.com/prednisolone/article.htm

Carafate aka Sucralfate

http://www.medicinenet.com/sucralfate/article.htm

Different manufacturers will be listed b/c there are generic versions and are made by different companies. Sucralfate and prednisolone are the generic names/the actual drug, whereas Carafate and Pediapred are brand names. (Ex: Aventis makes Carafate the brand; Marion Laboratories (Hoechst Marion Roussel Inc, Kan-. sas City, Mo, makes a generic version, but is not the only one.). You can get sucralfate in a liquid or pill-the liquid is easiest for a ferret; you'd have to compound the giant 1g pills anyway.

Pediapred is made by Celltech, but other versions include Orapred, Orapred ODT, Prelone, by other companies.

We get ours through Butler Veterinary Supply in the US, if that helps your vet; I could email you their contact info to see if they could help.

Best,

April (vet tech and ferret owner)
