Subject: [ferrethealth] Help with ultrasound and pathology report Dr.'s Opinions Please
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

4 year old spayed female
Assesment:
1. There was a moderate peritoneal effusion. A sample was obtained.
2. There was a 4.25 cm hyperechoic mass containing multiple fluid-
filled cavities, up to 1.95 cm in diameter. The mass appeared to be
attached to the caudal aspect of the right lateral liver lobe.
3. There was a 1.35 X 0.94 cm hypoechoic tissue with irregular margins
in the mesentry.
4. There were multiple areas of hyporchoic tissue with irregular
margins in the mesentry.
5. There were multiple lymph nodes throughout the abdomen that were
hypoechoic and enlarged.
6. There were solitary cysts in each kidney.

Diagnosis:
1. Peritoneal effusion
2. Hepatic mass, likely neoplastic.
3. Calcified mass, possibly associated with the spleen, like neoplastic.
4. Probable carcinomatosis or diffuse inflammation, mesentery.
5. Lymphomegaly
6. Renal cysts, like incidental

CYTOLOGY
Two smears are prepared from fluid tapped from the abdominal cavity of
a 4 year old spayed female ferret.

FLUID CYTOLOGY DIFFERENTIAL & DESCRIPTION
Mono % Lymph % Neurs % Bands % Eosns % Mesoth %
2 83 14 1

The sediment smears show mostly red blood cells with a predominance of
scattered mature lymphocytes, occasional neutrophils and desquamated
mesotheilal cell noted. The cells are set on a pink background. No
actactive inflammation is seen and no organisms are present.

CONCLUSION: STERILE OBSTRUCTIVE EFFUSION WITH OBSTRUCTION OF LYMPH AND
VASCULAR FLOW

COMMENT: Cardiac disease, hepatic congestion or obstructive masses
within the abdominal cavity should all be considered as possible
contributing causes of this type of fluid accumulation. Suggest
reevaluate in the light of the clinical presentation.

I was told that she had cancer, some kind of carcinoma but they don't
know what kind. She had an ultrasound in May but they couldn't get a
sample. She had the moderate peritoneal effusion then and some of the
other stuff mentioned. I will have to look on the earlier sonogram
report.

Cytology says, "No active inflammation."
Radiology says, "Probable diffuse inflammation, mesentery."

I need a better explanation please.

Thanks so much.
Karen
