Subject: [ferrethealth] Bear
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Hi all. I'm a newbie to this group. I've had ferrets
for the last 10 years or so. I currently have 4
little fuzzies - Bear, Bailey, Gizzie and Gonzo. Bear
and Bailey are 6 and Giz and Zo are 2-3 (we adopted,
so not sure of age).
Anyway, my concern at the moment is my little Bear.
He has insulinoma and adrenal disease. He was
diagnosed with insulinoma last October. He underwent
surgery at the end of May for the adrenal disease.
His right adrenal was removed, but his left adrenal is
diseased as well. During surgery, the vet removed one
rather large tumor from the pancreas. Things have
been going well - Lupron injection once a month, 1ml
Pred twice a day - no episodes at all. Just recently
we added propecia (spelling?) to the regiment. He
gets .5ml once a day - he's peeing everywhere and just
a little at a time. Within the last couple of weeks
we've had two episodes of pawing at the mouth and
drooling. I've gotten him out of it each time by
feeding A/D and giving him his pred. The first time I
did use honey. I've noticed that Bear seems to be
losing weight recently too. I guess I'm just
wondering how bad things will get before I lose him.
Is he suffering now? Is his quality of life still
good? I've only lost one ferret and she passed during
surgery many years ago. I'm in uncharted territory
and I don't know what signs to be looking for. Is it
a good idea to start preparing for possibly losing
Bear or am I over-reacting? Any advice or guidance
would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Michelle
