Subject: [ferrethealth] Advanced Nutrition 8 in 1 ferret food/melatonin implants
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

On 3-17-07 a member posted ,stating that she has exclusively fed her
ferret 8 in 1 Advanced Nutrition, same as me. She went on to say that
her ferret died of renal failure & her vet cautioned her about the
high (45%) protein content of the food. Should I cease feeding my
sweetbaby this food? My Delilah was born 12-11-2005.

Lastly,in the spirit of adrenal disease prevention, would melatonin
implants be a viable idea?

thanks so much

[Moderator's Note: the foods that recently were PROVEN to have caused ACUTE kidney failure in cats and dogs were not kibbles. Those were wet foods in cans and pouches. None were ferret foods. They were cat and dog foods. Nor do I recall 8 in 1 being among the foods recalled.

Yes, ferrets do at times die of kidney failure from a range of causes, usually chronic kidney failure (which is long process over time, especially at older ages). A cause of acute kidney failure to be considered for ferrets which was written about by a pair of vets who have treated such animals is too many raisins.

If I recall right you are referring to a person whose ferret needed the protein levels reduced to reduce phosphorus in the diet. That is done for chronic kidney failure. It does not mean that the food is the cause of the disease, but that the ferret's disease has caused special dietary needs.]
