Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Fixed Female Ferret Exhibiting Sexual Behavior
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

While hairloss is a classic symptom of adrenal disease, some ferrets
can have advanced tumors with little to no outward signs.

I had a two year old DEW that had a gorgeous soft full coat come in
as a rescue. She had the most endearing behavior of mothering toys.
By the time she exhibited vulvar enlargment (she went to surgery
within the week) her tumor was so advanced it had invaded the vena
cava and the liver. She only lived a short time after that.

My experience with ferrets that show a return to sexual behaviors, is
that they have adrenal disease. The Tennessee Panel can be done to
check hormone levels (then you still have to decide if you are going
to have surgery for her) or an exploratory can be done, and if a
tumor is present, hopefully it can be removed. If she were mine, at
two years of age she should be a good surgical candidate, I would
have my vet go in and take a peek.

Good luck with her,
Julie

She does not have any hair loss, behavior changes (other than the
humping), nor does she have a swollen vulva....I'm not sure if this
is normal play behavior or if it is something to be concerned about.
