Stacey,
I noticed this behavior in both my male and female ferrets. When they were allowed to dig in the lawn, they would dig the ground loose then scrunch it under their bodies and drag it backwards, then move back to the hole to dig more. It is the way they move earth out of the burrow they dig. They exhibit the same behavior with toys in the house. Tuck it under their body and drag it backwards.
In the matter of about ten minutes, my ferrets were able to dig a hole deep enough that they could hide in and not be seen from a distance.
