Subject: [ferrethealth] Right Side Ataxia in Seven Year Old Female Ferret
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I am trying to do some research on a recent problem with my ferret.

Yesterday, when we opened up our ferret cage, my one ferret came out
with her head tilted to the left and unable to walk straight and kept
stumbling left. I immediately checked her blood glucose and it was
90. We then took her directly to the vets.

Her symptoms are; unsteadiness, head tilted from 45 degrees left to
almost completely upside down, she will walk "on top" of her right
feet instead of her paw pad being on the ground but will correct it
after a few steps. She will turn slightly to the right if enticed
with ferretone, but other wise only moves left-ward. She doesn't
show any signs of ear infection. She also does not show any signs of
pain (grinding teeth, vocalization, or pushing her head onto
something). She has an appetite, but she has problems getting
coordinated to pick up the food and eat it. Her bathroom habits had
been normal but now she is having problems not falling into it while
going and also her poop has become diarrhea. She still has interest
in what is going on and wants to make sure her toys are all in the
correct spots.

Background information; around 7 years old (adopted around 2),
spayed, had adrenal (left) surgery 3-4 years ago, currently on Lupron
125 ug once a month, currently on Pred (1.5 mg SID) for insulinoma.

The vet said his gut feeling was a brain tumor, but since she was
eating/drinking and not in any pain that he wants to see how it will
progress in the next few days. We have increased her pred to 1.25 mg
BID and began giving her 0.2 mL Amoxi BID. We increased the pred in
case there is brain swelling and the Amoxi in case of ear infection.

Any help and insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your
time in reading my post.
