The order of effectiveness appears to be:
most effective usually
surgery
Lupron depot or Superlorelin depot (not available
here yet) AND melatonin implant
Lupron depot or Suprelorelin depot
Melatonin implant
oral melatonin
less effective usually
though as with so many other things there are
exceptions and there are debates about some
things. Also, how good the surgery is can depend
on the skill of the surgeon, the techniques used,
and if the client allows the surgeon to use the
techniques with which that vet personally does
best. (A person has to recognize that those who
move the delivering end to the scalpel tend to
know their own strengths and how to evaluate what
they are encountering.).
