To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I use a Freestyle meter here in my shelter. I have often pricked my own finger to get a reading, just to make sure the meter is reading in correctly (in addition to the regulating juice from the meter). A healthy ferret and I will both read in at 100-130, so I reckon we're both ok.

But of course when I'm doing a reading I'm not going for EXACT. A critter tests in at 100 and is feeling well, no problem. A critter who is feeling puny and I have enough suspicion to test, then reads in at 40...well, of course that's close enough to know what's going on. A critter tests in at 80 and we'll re-test, plus pay attention to how he's feeling, etc. I've never had a problem figuring out what was up with a critter insulinoma wise with the home meter.
