Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Question regarding Feline TD for teeth...
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I'm not a big fan of TD or anything Hills makes. It will do a little to
crunch off the plaque/tartar but probably not a heck of a lot more than
regular food, imho. Has the vet tried using a plain metal dental scaler
without anesthesia? I have been working on the teeth of one of my new
rescues, just with my thumbnail. It's slow going - I stop when he seems
ouchy, but I've gotten a lot of the calculus off of his teeth and his breath
is already starting to smell better.

For ferrets that don't have buildup already, a quick solution is a damp
piece of gauze. If they let you rub that against their teeth, it'll do
almost as good a job cleaning off the food bits as most commercial brushes.

I wonder about feline greenies, if we're going to talk about using treats.
They're a heck of a lot more palatable. Also, raw meaty bones, if you can
get a ferret interested in them, seem like a good choice - something heavy
that they won't actually be eating much of, just chewing and playing with,
like beef marrow bones.
