I was out of town over the weekend, so I realize my reply on this may be
a little late.

However, the one case like this I have personally seen (in a ferret
rescued by a friend) was caused by a severe inner ear infection. The
ferret had no outward signs of an ear problem, and it was difficult for
the vet to determine it was an ear problem.

After the infection was treated, the ferret did still have a head tilt,
but was able to function well, and lived for several years before
passing from an unrelated problem. The ferret was already 4 when the
ear problem occurred, so she lived to an old age.

I did have one of my girls develop an ear problem, although not as
severe. She seemed fine in the morning when I left for work, but when I
got home, she was tilting her head and walking in circles. She also had
blood around one ear. We immediately took her to the vet, and she had
an inner ear infection. In her case, after treatment, she returned to
normal.
