Subject: [ferrethealth] Pred belly vs. Cardiomyopathy vs. ???
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
My at least 7 or 8 year old rescue (came to me in Jan 2006 and was at
least 6 then) has insulinoma, IBD and adrenal disease. He is taking
pediapred 0.3 ml of 6.75mg/5ml bid. If I drop him below that he
becomes symptomatic. His blood glucose stays down around 50 or 60 even
on the pred. I just got a script for diazoxide to add to the pred.
He has always been a lean solid ferret and now I am not sure if he has
pred belly or cardiomyopathy or what. I took him to the vet and she
thought it was just pred belly. But it seems to me that his belly is
very taught and not pliable or palpable. Kinda like it is filled with
gas. We started him on 0.1 ml bid but it doesn't seem to help.
He also gets leftover soup several times a day - carnivore care, a/d
and pet tinic, with ground up cornish game hen. This is what I give
Sammy, who is so thin he requires feeding every 3 hours. They also
have kibble freely available (TF venison-turkey-lamb OR TF Complete).
For the past few days he has acted a little uncomfortable when picked
up and will make a little whimper occasionally when picked up. So, any
ideas? Hints? Like I said, the vet thinks it is just pred belly. I do
have bloodwork from end of July and he was treated with antibiotics
for high WBC count, but the local vet could not get blood out of him
for a followup.
He also has fat pads or enlarged lymph nodes on the side of his neck.
His skin is taught and he is difficult to scruff. Today I noticed he
had soiled himself, a first. Poops look liquid, like the duck soup he
gets. There is no form to them.
I am sorry this is disjointed. I have just tried to remember all I can
and my organizational abilities are on overtime! Sorry! Thank you for
any help or suggestions you can offer.
