Is there any possibility that this was a spider bite? I ask because my husband had a spider bite on the forehead that progressed in a way that sounds very similar to what you described, like a swollen pimple, then with necrotized flesh at the top, which eventually fell off, leaving raw fresh skin underneath. I guess the major difference from what you describe is that a ferret didn't bite his wound ;) Anyway, I thought I'd mention it, in case it hadn't been considered.

FWIW, we live in an area where there aren't supposed to be any native poisonous spiders, but in this day and age where produce, lumber, household furnishings, etc are shipped from all over, spiders can easily hitch rides to geographical locations where you wouldn't expect them.
