Subject: [ferrethealth] Flu Like Symptoms & Bruising
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hello,

My ferret Vivi, who will be 7 in November, has flu like symptoms:
runny nose (clear discharge), watery eyes, sneezing,
lethargy, diahrrea (brown & slightly mucousy), teeth grinding, a bit
of gagging and shows little interest in food. I noticed her sneezing
a bit yesterday and figured I'd keep an eye on it. She ate ok this
morning and seemed fine, but this evening when I got her out to
snuggle, I noticed these symptoms.

I also did a glucose test in case low glucose was causing her to seem
sleepy. It was 52, which I know is certainly not good. I'm also
concerned about the fact that it was hard to get the bleeding to stop.
And after it finally stopped bleeding, it started back up again a few
times. I've done the glucose tests here at home many times now and it
usually goes well.

After doing a thorough overall inspection of her, while washing her up
after the bleeding, I also discovered that her lower back (mainly on
her right side) has a red bruise that's about 3" x 2", and is
definitely not from hair growth. I couldn't see it until her hair was
wet. She looks fine otherwise. She is nice and pink. But, had I
noticed this sooner I would have definitely skipped the glucose test.

To make matters worse, my regular vet is not in again until Tuesday.
I called the only emergency vet in this area and their only ferret
knowledgeable vet is out of town. The vet that was on knows very
little about ferrets and won't see them. I'm going to check back
there once another vet comes in for the next shift, just in case they
can help, but I'm not expecting to have much luck because the vet that
is out of town is the only vet there that has ever seen my ferrets in
the past.

Also here's a brief history of recent events that may or may not be
connected to what is happening now.

07/24/07 - Had cryosurgery done, left adrenal gland removed. No right
gland found, vet suspected it had atrophied since no other adrenal
surgery was done. 3 nodules were also discovered on her pancreas and
were removed.

08/24/07 - Checkup to make sure electrolyte level was ok. It was 33.
Vet was very pleased with how she was doing.

I really don't know what to do. I was able to get 5cc SubQ fluids
into her to help prevent dehydration, but I'm not sure what else I
might be able to do for her, since I can't find a vet that can see her.
