Subject: [ferrethealth] Bear - funny taste in mouth? (kidneys? heart meds?)
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi, all.

Well, we've had a really good last couple of months with Bear. After his last Lasix episode, we stopped Lasix and he really bounced back. We haven't had to coax him into eating or drinking since then.

However, there has been one factor I don't like: he frequently acts like something doesn't taste good, almost as if he has dry mouth. At first, I thought that maybe he had an ulcer and was grinding his teeth, but it's not that. I've seen insulinomic tooth grinding, and this is totally different, plus he actually has bad breath! Our "non-ferrety-but-nearby" vet says it could be a sign of toxicity in the kidneys, which is very possible given his history. He's had some loose stool lately, too.

And now (since yesterday) his appetite is lessening again. We gave him Carafate yesterday because he's had some tummy upset. Do Carafate and Omeprazole lower appetite?

Otherwise, I'm concerned we will have to play with his dosages for his heart meds again if his kidneys are having trouble with them. Sigh. He didn't seem to feel very good this morning - didn't want to eat his A/D without lots of coaxing (and warming it up, and adding Flax seed oil to it.)

Any tips welcome. I'll probably bring him in for some bloodwork just to make sure his kidneys are ok.
