I can think of two possible reasons but it would
not surprise me if your vet has more.

1. Looking for an alternative disease which --in
addition to his existing problem -- would make
him less capable, for example insulinoma.

2. Looking to see if enough values are off that
perhaps his problem is not one of those rare
responses, but instead an underlying disease
affecting abilities such as lymphoma in the
spinal cord. In that case the timing would be a
coincidence leading all on a false trail.

Do you have litter pots with ramps or low openings?
Have you tried alternatives like newspaper on top of
plastic so he doesn't have any climb and has better
traction.

Have you considered a mobility cart?

Here is the handicapped ferret links section from my
current list of ferret lists (subject to change as I learn
more and links change):

Chihuahua size diapers (but check to make sure still
in stock and note that none of these have been
reported on yet for how well they do or do not work for ferrets):

(also consider small Preemie Diapers from baby supply
stores and make a tail opening)

Be warned that it can be hard to put tail openings in those if
they are like disposable diapers in the 70s when I had to do
it for a goat during a long trip. (BTW, she was GOOD in the
car and we finally stopped trying that approach since it
wasn't needed.)
