Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: Adrenal Disease: need materials about surgery
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

Hi Tatiana,

I am sorry to hear of Asya's adrenal problems. I don't have any info to
give you on the surgery, but if she is a good candidate for the surgery and
you find a competent vet- I would consider it.

If she isn't a good candidate for the surgery, you may want to consider
using melatonin- either given as implants (more effective) or orally (we can
purchase them here at any health store or grocery store).

I have had great results with the melatonin implants in my ferrets. Both
were too old for surgery (and Jynx just passed away this morning due to
unrelated complications).

I have also heard that Lupron may be even more effective than the melatonin.

Of course, neither of these drugs is a cure. They just seem to help slow
the progression of the disease. So surgery- if she's a good candidate- is a
better option. Also you may want to consider using melatonin after surgery,
as there is a theory that it that will help prevent the adrenal disease from
reoccurring. It can come back...

Definitely do your own research and consult a vet the you feel comfortable
with. I am not a vet, this is just based on my very limited experience with
adrenal.

I hope things work out for the best with Asya.

Tara
