I have heard privately from a vet that those water
additives don't work. Hopefully, more info will be
given for us all since I know nothing about those
products
If i recall right soft food has been connected to
increases in tartar compared to kibble in ferrets
in studies by T. He of Sweden and I think also in
other studies since I recall that statement appeared
even in the first edition of _Biology and Diseases of
the Ferret_ (which I offhand think predates He's
ferret studies). It can also be found in the second
edition on page 273, Refs for that statement in the text:
King JD, Glover RE. The relative effects of dietary
constituents and other factors upon calculus and
gingival disease in the the ferret. J. Pathol Bacteriol
1945; 57:333
King JD, Rowles SL, Thewlis J et al. Chemical and x-ray
examination of deposits removed from the teeth of
golden hamsters and ferrets. J Dent Res 1955; 34:650
(There is also a J. He doing dental studies on ferrets in
Texas.) Shoot, I can't find that particular study right now.
T. He has something like 4 or 5 ferret dental, gingival, or
diet and skull shape studies. I recall having to look a bit
widely when I was locating some of them for something in
the past.)
One of the things which makes it harder for vets to know
about all ferret studies is that a number of them appear with
ferrets as an animal model for human health related studies,
so not in veterinary journals. It does mean that there are
more studies than there otherwise would be, but also that a
number of interesting pieces of info are hidden away in
unexpected places. (Which is one reason that people like
Pam, Tony, and I often alert folks to ferret related abstracts
when we find them.) Heck, I remember at one point mentioning
to one of the premier ferret adrenal study researchers about a
human health journal publishing a new study on ferrets with
LH as the trigger for adrenal tumors which offered
independent confirmation and was shocked to find out that
for the first time ever I'd run into a study he hadn't heard about
(yet). That is how hard it can be to know about some of those
studies: they are published widely enough that even regular
searches miss some.
