Subject: [ferrethealth] Antibiotics for IBD
To: FHL <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>
I have a 7 year old neutered hob who has chronic diarrhoea. The vet and
I think that it is probably IBD. I don't want to have an intestinal
biopsy done because of his age and because he is not fit for an
operation. He used to have quite bad diarrhoea, many bowel movements
that had different colours and consistencies. Then he was put on
clavamox for his teeth and gums and the diarrhoea got a lot better. As
soon as the antibiotics were stopped, the diarrhoea came back with a
vengeance. Then he developed a bad cough and was put on another
(injectable) antibiotic called Borgal (one ml contains, as active
ingredients: Sulfadoxine PhEur 200 mg / Trimethoprim PhEur 40 mg) and he
got 0.1 ml once a day. He stayed on that for 3 weeks and it worked
wonders for his diarrhoea, instead of having 12-16 (runny) bowel
movements a day, he had 6-8 well formed completely normal bowel
movements. It also stopped his cough. Then the antibiotic was stopped
and within a few days his diarrhoea was back. He has numerous bowel
movements again but they are not as bad as before.
Pred has been tried but didn't work for him and I read in the archives
that for some IBD ferrets, antibiotics work best. I was just wondering
what sort of antibiotic is used. My vet mentioned an antibiotic that
just works in the intestine and isn't absorbed? (If I got it right.)
So really I'm interested to hear from people who have treated their IBD
ferrets with antibiotics and let me know which antibiotic they used, I
did read in the archives that they may stop working after a while and
that the antibiotic may need to be changed so am interested in more info.
Best wishes
