Subject: [ferrethealth] Taurine Supplements
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have some older ferrets that regularly eat my 'chicken gravy',
which is just 2 whole pressure-cooked chickens and ground up in my
Vita-Mix using only the cooking water. I also give them a 'blop' of
Nutri-Cal. They get 2 servings a day and rarely eat hard kibble.

I was worried about them getting enough Taurnine. Because one of my
guys was just diagnosed with a 'heart murmur' and is on Lasix.

Found some Tauring capsules at our local pharmacy/health food store.
They are made by TwinLab. 50 capsules/1000mg each. I have been
mixing the powder of 2 capsules with 5mL of water and giving each
ferret 0.5mL. So they are each getting approx 200mg/day.

The problem I have is that the powder doesn't mix very well with
water and it settles to the bottom.

Has anyone else had this happen? Is there another type of Taurine
that would work better?

Or what about Ferretvite? I saw that it has taurine, but it also has
a lot of sugar. And some of my guys have insulinoma.

Thanks for your help,
Liz
