Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Injectable Ivomec for Ear Mites -vs- Diluting & treating in the ear
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

It was me that had/has the problem with the injectable Ivermectin.

My Koda and Fizzle are thought to have IBD, but to make sure it
wasn't just parasites, my vet gave me the injection to give to Koda
and Fizzle. Fizzle got .03cc and Koda got .05cc straight, not
diluted. Koda started having seizures the next morning, and by the
next morning (Sun) was completely paralyzed, he couldn't even blink
his eyes. I ended up taking him up to my girlfriends vet in Nevada
on Sun, and he spent the next 16 days in the hospital on IV's, anti
seizure meds, and was syringe fed for over 2 weeks. Fizzle was fine.
The vet said Koda had a toxic reaction to the Ivermectin. Koda is
home now, but is still paralyzed. He can move his head around now,
can eat on his own as long as the food is put in front of him, he
can't get up to go to it. He curls around backwards in a circle when
he has to potty, so if I see him, I can catch him and hold him over
the litter box. If he has to go, he will, but alot of times, when
I'm not there, he potties, then has to lay in it, he can't get out
of it. He's not in any pain, and he has feeling, and flinches when I
tickle him, but the spark in his eye's are gone. I know he has to be
depressed. I do physical therapy with him everyday, and I do see
small improvements. He is starting to curl around more just to get
in a different position, not just to potty, and he isn't going potty
as much at night, so it makes it easier for me in the morning, but
he does have to have a bath several times a day to get him cleaned
up. The vet who treated him in Nevada wants a new blood test to see
if there's anything different from when he came up there, and I will
be taking Koda, and the others, up to Nevada in 2 weeks, and he will
see the vet then. The vet says he should be up and walking and
running by now, but he's not, so I'm afraid he may be this way for
along time.

So, my advice would be to use the diluted Ivomec in the ears to
treat eat mites.
