Subject: [ferrethealth] Anemia
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I have a male ferret around 6 yo that is obviously anemic. Pale paw pads,
nose and gums. No change in behavior, eating, sleeping, potty or play habits.
He looks thin but his weight is only about 3-4 ounces thinner than normal.
He is current 2.3 lbs verses a normal weight this time of year of 2.4-2.6
lbs....winter weight for him is around 2.10-2.14 lbs He coat is scruffy...but
most of my ferrets are changing coats right now. So they all look scruffy and a
tad thin.
This ferret was used as a blood donor about 3 months ago. So I am wondering
if ferrets can get bone marrow that gets lazy. Or maybe he caught a virus
after donating.
I noticed some wheezing almost like you hear with human breathing "rales"
about a week ago. I started supplimental chicken gravy feedings adding pet
tinic to the food. His weight is still the same but he is filling out. I start
tylan, which i had from when everyone was sick before. dosing every 12 hrs.
Now 72 hrs later on tylan his "rales" are gone. One week on total and is
nose is looking pinker.
Money is none existant for vet visit right now and my vet account is maxed
out. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Toni
