To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

HI Jeff;

The effectiveness of any heartworm treatment depends on if you get all of the recommended meds into your ferret. As for the difference in cost you have to make the decision about that based on personal budget and whether you want to use one product or more to protect your pet from certain vermin.

Heartguard protects against HWs."Heartgard has no effect on fleas or intestinal worms, so it will be necessary to treat for these with another product, or products."

Heartguard Plus protects against HWs. ..."Heartgard Plus also controls roundworms and hookworms in dogs".

Revolution protects againt HWs. "In addition to heartworm prevention, Revolution kills adult fleas and prevents egg stages of fleas hatching. It also treats ear mites in cats and dogs (and ferrets). It treats sacroptes mites and the American Dog Tick in dogs and intestinal worms - roundworms and hookworms - in cats. It is a once monthly topical liquid applied to the skin. In dogs, it will be necessary to treat for intestinal worms with another product."

So the reason to use Revolution would be the broader spectrum of vermin it will protect against. If you don't feel that you need all that protection then you may prefer to choose Heartguard or Heartguard Plus.

One thing you said that I find curious is that you don't need to protect against mosquitoes/heartworms in the winter. OK you said it via omission. I was curious about this because where I live mosq. are a problem year round. I live on the Gulf Coast in Texas. So am I safe in assuming you live somewhere where no self-respecting mosq. would show it's pointy little nose after September or October at the latest?

We started our three ferrets on Revolution today, the 5-15 lb.
sized dose. Our vet administered today's dose at their check-up. Our
immediate concern was to erradicate ear mites, but we also want to
prevent heartworms during the spring, summer, and fall months, which
is why we used this size (based on recommendations in prior posts by
Jerry Murray, DVM).
My question is about ongoing treatment for heartworm prevention.
What are the benefits of Heartgard vs. Revolution? And, with
Heartgard, what is the recommended dosage for ferrets? In terms of
cost, the Heartgard is about 40% of the cost of the Revolution, but is
it as safe and effective?

Thanks,

Jeff
