Subject: [ferrethealth] Chin and nose dragging (Tocho update)
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi everyone,

You may remember my post about my boy, Tocho... basically very sick,
lethargic, weak, pooping very little (about 1/4 size of a pea). He
had bloodwork, stool and urine checks, and all were normal. He's on
Flagyl, Clavamox and carafate right now and they seem to be helping in
most ways.

He's dancing, playing, but still isn't 100% himself yet, but a huge
huge difference from how he was prior to the meds.

I am also hand-feeding him, per the vet, a mixture of softened, watery
kibble (blended) with ferretone and ferret vite mixed in. He does
okay on this, but has to be coaxed mostly. He's eaten a few nibbles
of dry kibble here and there as well.

Prior to meds, and still happening, is this nose & chin dragging
behavior. He seems to mostly do this after giving food, ferretone,
ferret vite, etc. But it's not the normal "chin cleaing" behavior.

For example, he first will often drag one side of his face/nose on the
floor, then the other, then scoot his chin all the way across the
carpet, rather quickly.

The only other ferret I've seen do this was my little Peanut when she
had a severe blockage and was misdiagnosed initially with ulcer. The
day she went back to the vet she was frantically rubbing her chin,
neck, belly all over the floor. We lost her, but not due to the
blockage, but rather aspirating fluid before anyone came in to the
clinic the next morning. But Tocho showing this behavior worries me.

Again, his energy level is way different, and slowly his stools are
looking far better... they were tiny, mucousy, and very seedy prior to
the antibiotics.

Is this chin/neck dragging behavior "normal," or is it indicative of
something medically wrong?

Thanks.
