Subject: [ferrethealth] IBD? and Imuran Experiences
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

My ferret Franklin, male, 5 years old, has been gradually more and
more lethargic over the last year. He has had numerous tests and the
vet suspected IBD. In July it became clear that he is also in kidney
failure, although he is doing extremely well and we have never even
had to sub-q him yet for his kidney problems.

He has been on baby food since June and that helped fatten him up
immensely. However at around that same time he started pooping just
dark brown reddish puddles of poop. It looks like a puddle of maple
syrup almost (but not see-through and dark brown/brick colored). He
has been doing this for 3 months now. Sometimes it is a little bit
formed. Always the same color. Now over the last 2 weeks he has
started shivering a lot and holding his abdomen stiffly.

He is already on Pepcid AC, Sulcrafate and .1 Prednisolone with no
change in poops. He eats ground Hill's ZD and turkey baby food mixed
together, with Pedialyte (for kidneys) and water. He only eats twice
a day (is the time between feedings making his stomach worse??) We
added Prilosec and Bennebac to his regimen last week with not much
improvement. He is a great weight and is fairly active, although he
has to stop and rest a lot.

The vet felt his abdomen last night and felt his intestines were hard,
and he is uncomfortable. I don't know what the hardening means
really. He thinks it is time for Imuran if he is not better by his
next appointment, next week (we are going to give the Prilosec a few
more days to work).

My question is, he has never had a biopsy to confirm IBD. Could it be
anything else going on? Is there anything else I could try?

Also I would like to know if people have noticed improvements when
using Imuran.
