Subject: [ferrethealth] Need insight on bloodwork results (was Trouble testing BG on my ferret)

First, I would like to thank everyone who responded to my initial
request for help with my Contour glucometer. I never was able to get
a large enough sample, so I ended up taking him in to work on
Saturday (I work at an animal hospital), and he got an exam and a
blood panel sent out to Idexx.

BTW, anyone using the Bayer Contour, be aware, it reads VERY low.
When we pulled Tanner's blood, I tested a drop of it on my meter, and
got a reading of 54, which is half what the actual glucose was!

Nothing on his bloodwork really jumps out at me, though I haven't
discussed it with his vet yet. I was just wondering if anyone here
might notice something I'm not. (I trust his vet, but she doesn't see
many ferrets, so I'm just looking for a second opinion.)

History: 3.5 year old neutered male, no history of illness,
vaccinated in May '07 with Merial Purevax Distemper vaccine and Imrab-
3. Slightly reduced activity level; slight weight loss, but FEELS
thinner (especially in front end, no "pear belly"); reduction in food
intake. All of the changes are still what I would consider within
normal limits, but off for him, especially with fall coming.
Currently being free-fed Zupreem ferret food.

With his weight loss and reduced activity level, my main concern was
insulinoma but I don't think his glucose is low enough for that,
unless the diagnostic levels have changed. This bloodwork was after
what was most likely at least a 2-3 hour fast, although it's hard to
be sure, since he's free fed. If no one here has any other
suggestions, I may take him in again next week for a true 4 hour
fasting glucose.

Thank you in advance for any insight you may have.

Becky
