Erin,
I have been giving glucosamine to one of my ferrets for several years,
and it does seem to help. He seems to have arthritic or otherwise
dysfunctional hips, but he's been normal since the glucosamine.
Supposedly it helps with normal joint function, so it may not be as
helpful for your ferret. There don't seem to be any serious side
effects though, so it wouldn't hurt to try it on her.
I use Cosequin for Cats, and give my ferret half of a capsule a day.
Added to his chicken gravy, it goes down without a fuss. You can get
Cosequin from any vet. Since it's formulated for pets, it's more
expensive than other formulations you can get. The advantage to it is
that it comes powdered in capsules, while most human preps are in hard
pills. If you choose to go with human products, you can get them at
just about any health store or drug store, and many grocery stores.
Human preps go for about $30 for a bottle of 120 500/400 mg tablets in
generics. Cosequin can be gotten online for about $14 for a box of 80
125/100 mg capsules. That makes the Cosequin about 3x more expensive
than the human generics.
I am not a vet; please check with your vet for advice and dosages
specific to your little girl.
