Glucosamine is used orally as a treatment for Osteoarthritis and
works by increasing the spacing between the bony faces of joints
thereby reducing friction and wear.
I found the following some years ago when looking for treatment for
my own painful hip, it is part of some research into glucosamine
conducted in Belgium and reported in The Lancet, a well respected
UK medical journal.
I approached several vets (in the US) with the idea that it could be
used in the treatment of insulinoma in ferrets and one well known
ferret vet in the US started a trial with some of her ferret patients. A
far as I know this trial was not initially a success but was continuing
with an increased dosage. I believe it has also been tried in Canada
but I have no more info on that.
See the caution at the end re diabetes.

...We have some concerns about the potential
adverse effects of long-term glucosamine therapy on glucose
homoeostasis.
The use of fasting glucose as a sole measure of glucose
homoeostasis is insufficient...
There is growing evidence that glucosamine can lead to defects in
glucose homoeostasis...
Glucosamine sulphate is not a recognised treatment for metastatic
insulinoma, but it probably contributed to symptom control in this
patient. Given the effect of glucosamine on glucose homoeostasis,
glycaemic monitoring is warranted in patients on long-term therapy,
and it should be used cautiously in patients with diabetes.
