Subject: [ferrethealth] behavioral hormonal balance question
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Whizbang has clear adrenal growth symptoms and through a scheduling set of problems
she is on Lupron Depot and melatonin implant while awaiting surgery. (Neither has kicked
in which leaves me concerned that she may have an adrenal carcinoma or adrenal
lymphoma -- if so then hopefully a well encapsulated carcinoma that can be completely
excised.)

Anyway, Whizbang is someone who was fine but not bubbly except in short bouts, but she
used to always frustrate easily and be very picky about who she would warm up to (kind of
like a one-person dog but not violent although she will scratch at the tops of feet if
ignored too long when she is demanding attention, or scratch the legs of people if she
goes up pants legs to the point of not being able to go further so a person has to gently
tap her rear when she starts up pant legs to get her to back out to see who is bumping
her).

Her only CBC and Chem Panel aberrations were consist with mild dehydration, but she left
here from a long sleep w/out drinking, had an hour's drive, then an hour's wait, and would
not drink at the hospital so that could be all that is.

Since she has had physical symptoms of adrenal neoplasia (sacral fur loss, very mild vulvar
swelling) she has been happy -- extremely happy -- 24/7. We have never seen anything
like it: a ferret who joy is life is improved by the changes that go with an adrenal growth.

Obviously, her adrenal growth needs to be tackled, so we are left with a question: would a
very, very mild estrogen supplementation or the use of phytoestrogens such as those in
soy protein or cherries be safe afterward to see if they improve her mood in her normal
day to day life? Has anyone looked at that? It doesn't sound like something anyone will
have had a need to look into before because it is so unusual.

We realize there could be potential downsides, some large such as if the amount was too
large (or maybe even used too long when very low) perhaps it could cause marrow
damage, but does anyone have a handle on if there is a safe way to try it? We need to
remove her problem but if we can have her happy like this afterward her life will be so
much better for this quirky little girl.

Is it possible that the improvement in her mood is related to a different hormone such as
one of the androgens?

She is also less aggressive and more laid back with the other ferrets now, and more likely
to just let things which would have bugged her in the past just slide off without a worry.
