Subject: [ferrethealth] Re:Overweight ferret
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

At our ferret shelter here we occasionally get in obese ferrets and in every
case it was due to a combination of too much cage time/not enough exercise
and an extraordinarly poor diet; in some cases the ferret was fed dog food for
extended periods of time. One ferret I remember well had huge pods of fat
around his body and he seemed gigantic, but underneath he was nearly emaciated
and had been literally starving because he was getting very little protein.

Too many treats are a culprit, too, though I don't know if that is as much
of an issue down there as it is here in the USA. What condition are his teeth
in?

I would, of course, get a thorough veterinary examination including a full
blood workup as a baseline against which future exams can be compared, and to
rule out other root causes. But I suspect that after a few weeks of a very
high quality ferret food, no treats, and regular exercise, your ferret will be
lean and mean.
