Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Paralysed skunk - update
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I'm very interested in how Tyler is doing, I have a ferret that is
paralyzed also, and so far, nearly 3 months later, he still can't
move much. Koda was given an injection of Ivermectin, and it
paralyzed him. In the begining he couldn't even blink his eyes or
move his head. He spent 3 weeks in the hospital on IV's, catheters,
anti seizure meds, antibiotics and pred. He is weaning off the pred
now. He can curl and stretch his body and lift his head and look
around. He does this little backwards curl thing by tipping his head
backwards, stiffing his body and pushing with his front leg to break
dance backwards, then pee's and poops. But once he does his
business, he can't get out of it and ends up laying in it until I or
someone finds him and cleans him up. The vets thought that with
supportive care, he would come out of it, but now, 3 months later,
he's still paralyzed. The vet thinks this may be as good as it gets
for him. He's not in any pain, so I won't put him to sleep because
he's incovenient to care for. It's like he's had a stoke, but I've
been told ferrets don't have strokes, so I'm kinda lost. We do
physical therapy on him to keep his muscles from going to mush.
What type of care or meds has Tyler been on, and is prognosis
good that he'll walk like he used to?
Thanks, Melanie*
