This is exactly the pattern I saw with one of my ferrets when she developed adrenal disease. The hair loss was her only notable symptom, but she definitely had adrenal, confirmed through surgery. It's my understanding, though I certainly could be wrong, that the base of the tail hair loss is a classic symptom.
