Sukie asked if I would post this for all--
What I learned from the head of exotics at the vet school where I
work is that the gall bladder is not critical for digestion.
Basically the liver manufactures and secretes bile continually, which
drains into the gall bladder and collects there.
When stimulated by the digestive process, the gall bladder releases
the bile for use in the process. If there is no GB, the bile just
continually drains into the digestive tract. The only difference one
sees is the color of stools may be more green. But the body's ability
to digest various types of food isn't affected because the bile is
still being made.
Hopes this helps future cholecystectomy patients!
